MFG/PRO case studies

FCI Connectors Hungary Ltd.

The headquarters of this international firm is located in France. FCI develops and manufactures cables for various industries and delivers primarily to large IT companies, car and aircraft manufacturers. FCI first appeared in Hungary in September 1999, and production commenced in the Tatabánya plant in January next year. On an international level, all units of the company use the MFG/PRO integrated enterprise resource planning system, as in 1998, when FCI bought up Berg Electronics, the use of MFG/PRO 9.0 was decreed compulsory in order to establish a uniform company infrastructure.

The challenge

The Oscar program, which defines uniform international regulations for system implementation, was developed following the buyout. Regulations specify that the English language version of the software must be installed everywhere and forbid the use of any other language versions.

The parent company did not tell the Hungarian unit who to cooperate with during system implementation, but they did stipulate that FCI Hungary should request several proposals. The factory management has chosen ISYS-ON Ltd. The decision was primarily due to the fact that ISYS-ON has extensive experience in the field of MFG/PRO implementation and support, as this task has already been performed at several production companies.

Answering the Challenge

During the first phase of implementation they had to make it possible for orders and incoming merchandise to be entered into the system; to be able to fulfill deliveries and keep track of processes in between and monitor materials movement.

The implementation also posed a serious task for the FCI Hungary staff as a completely new enterprise had to be managed. This on one hand meant that there were no fixed processes that would have been hard to change, but on the other hand there was nothing to go back to, and foundations were lacking. ISYS-ON experts relied on their own experience in tackling the task when defining execution and implementation methods for each subprocess, including the advantages and drawbacks. FCI experts selected from various alternatives based on these information.

The server running the system is in France, in the FCI headquarters in Versailles. This provides for global unity of the company IT environment. This way MFG/PRO has basic functionality and settings that are valid for all countries alike.

Results and Plans

The time available for implementation was extremely short. This phase of the project was concluded in six weeks, with the investment of 50 expert mandays. This made it possible for procurement, sales, inventory management and production management to go live on the dates specified. This performance put the Tatabánya unit at the number one position worldwide.

The management of bookkeeping and accounting functions in MFG/PRO was implemented during the next phase and was concluded in April 2001. In the meantime, a third party performed bookkeeping tasks for FCI, but the data needed for bookkeeping was already retrieved from the system.

MFG/PRO now makes production monitoring much easier: up to date data can be retrieved at any moment on materials flow status, compliance with deadlines, scrap ratios, and the losses inflicted.
